What is PDF metadata?

Besides the pages you see, every PDF stores information about itself. The document properties include the title, author, subject and keywords, the application that created the document (Creator), the library that wrote the PDF (Producer), and the dates it was created and last modified. Many PDFs also contain an XMP metadata packet, an XML record that can repeat these values and add more, such as PDF/A identification or copyright details.

This PDF metadata viewer shows all of it in one place, together with technical details such as the PDF version, page count, page size, encryption and whether the file is tagged or signed. You can edit the main properties and save a new copy of the PDF, or export the metadata as JSON.

Why use it

Check before you share

Find out whether a PDF reveals your name, your company's software or an old internal title before you send it.

Fix titles and authors

Browsers and search engines show the PDF title instead of the file name. Change the PDF title and author so the document is presented properly.

Investigate a document

See which application produced a PDF and when it was created or modified, which is useful for audits and fact-checking.

Private by design

The PDF is read and edited in your browser, so confidential documents never leave your device.

Supported files and limits

  • Supported format: PDF.
  • Free accounts: files up to 50 MB. PDFSimplified Pro: files up to 200 MB.
  • PDFs that need a password to open can't be read. PDFs with only editing restrictions can be viewed but not edited.
  • Editing rewrites the XMP metadata to match the new values. PDF/A identification is kept.

Privacy and file handling

Your PDF is read and edited entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to our servers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I view the metadata of a PDF?

Upload the PDF above. The title, author, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, keywords, XMP metadata and technical details are shown immediately.

How do I change the author or title of a PDF?

After uploading, click Edit metadata, change the fields and click Save PDF. You'll download a copy of the PDF with the new properties.

What's the difference between Creator and Producer?

Creator is the application the document was written in, such as Microsoft Word. Producer is the software that converted it to PDF, such as macOS Quartz PDFContext or Adobe PDF Library.

What is XMP metadata?

XMP is an XML-based metadata format embedded in the PDF. Many readers, including Adobe Acrobat, prefer it over the classic document properties, so this tool updates both when you save.

Can I remove all metadata from a PDF?

Yes. Clear the fields while editing, or use the Delete Metadata tool to strip all metadata from a PDF in one step.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Viewing and editing happen in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
